About The Offline Shelf
Most survival information lives on phones and websites, and those are the first things to go when the power and the internet do. The Offline Shelf is a directory of the physical books worth owning before that happens.
How books get on the shelf
- Useful on paper. Every title is a practical reference you'd actually open during an emergency, not a novel and not a gear catalog.
- Verified metadata. Editions, ISBNs, publishers, and page counts are checked against Open Library records. If we can't verify a field, we leave it blank rather than guess.
- Honest blurbs. Each "why it's on the shelf" note is written by us, in plain English.
- No piracy, ever. We only flag free PDFs that the publisher or a government agency gives away (Hesperian's health guides, the USDA canning guide, FEMA and U.S. Army publications) or that are in the public domain on Project Gutenberg. We don't link to shadow libraries or "free PDF" sites.
Who runs it
The Offline Shelf is an independent project run by Addison. Suggestions and corrections are welcome. A contact address will be posted here at launch.
Medical and safety note
Books are no substitute for training. Take a first-aid or wilderness first-aid course, test your skills before you need them, and never eat a wild plant or mushroom on the strength of one book.
